VAT Refunds – TMS Finance

Plan the cash-flow gap while your VAT repayment is outstanding.

A VAT repayment can leave cash unavailable just when suppliers, wages or a new project need funding. TMS can discuss whether a suitable finance route could bridge the gap. Finance is borrowing against an expected repayment or wider business cash flow; it does not make HMRC process a return faster.

Before you proceed

Tell us the expected repayment, VAT period, submission date, cash required and any HMRC queries.

An enquiry does not commit you to proceed. Finance is subject to status, affordability, provider criteria and approval. Fees, security and personal guarantees may apply.

Two different routes

  • VAT repayment administration: your accountant or tax adviser checks the return, records, repayment details and any HMRC questions.
  • Finance while waiting: a provider may assess an expected repayment or other business evidence as part of a funding request. Interest, fees and repayment obligations can apply.

Timing is controlled by HMRC

HMRC says repayments are usually made within 30 days of receiving the VAT return. Checks can make it take longer. An estimate is not a guaranteed payment date. Your accountant can help establish the position and respond to requests for evidence.

When a funding discussion may help

  • A submitted repayment return is supported by reliable records.
  • A defined shortfall is holding up a viable order, supplier payment or project.
  • The business can explain how funding will be repaid if the VAT payment is delayed.
  • The commercial benefit justifies the full cost of borrowing.

Compare the downside as well as the benefit

Check the total cost, minimum interest period, security, guarantees and early-settlement terms. Ask what happens if HMRC reduces, offsets or delays the repayment. You may still owe the finance provider. An expected VAT refund is not guaranteed collateral or guaranteed approval.

Why speak to TMS?

We help separate a tax-administration issue from a funding need, then discuss realistic routes through selected lenders and finance providers. Specialist VAT-refund funding may not be available for every case; another working capital facility may fit better.

Have the return or accountant summary, submission date, repayment amount, relevant correspondence, recent accounts, bank statements and a fallback repayment plan available. Start with an enquiry; do not send tax-account passwords or HMRC sign-in details.

VAT cash-flow questions

No. HMRC controls processing and checks. Financing an expected repayment is a separate service.

No. It is finance with its own costs and repayment terms. HMRC remains responsible for deciding the VAT repayment.

Specialist-provider rules vary. A wider cash-flow facility may be considered, but an expected refund does not guarantee funding.

The finance agreement governs your obligation. You need to understand the fallback repayment route before accepting finance.
